I was actually experimenting with this in the GlassFish container. In GlassFish, you execute asadmin commands rather than sending extra deployments. For instance, you execute add-resources and pass an XML file that describes the resources to be added. Just something to think about, that the mechanism for sending the resources to the container isn't just dropping an XML file into the deploy directory.
