tried the vanilla version 14 download (which comes with Java 6) and this link
http://download-cf.jetbrains.com/idea/ideaIU-14-jdk-bundled.dmg
which comes with java8

Am guessing we need a Forge that works inside Java 8 - or an IDEA that works in Java 7?
