It is sometimes possible for the portlet url to increase in size during subsequent invocations.

This is due to passing the navigationstate parameter to an invocation as part of the form. The navigationalstate will now include an entry called "navigationalstate". If the invocation is called again, the navigationalstate will include a "natvigationstate" entry which will include a "navigationalstate" entry.  etc...
