We cannot save a portlet preference if the value is null. You can see in this class org.exoplatform.portal.pom.spi.portlet.Preference

    for (String value : values)
      {
         if (value == null)
         {
            throw new IllegalArgumentException();
         }
      }

But we can save if the value is a string "null".
