As root, if you click on edit page and then click on the cancel 'x' button, the portal will be rendered only as a single grey bar. You will need to close the browser and reopen it to get the proper portal page back.

The same thing occurs on the last page of create new page wizard where you drag and drop the portlets onto the page.
