I don't see a problem with the fix, now what could possibly be a problem with this fix :)

The problem is that after I apply it, mail sending still does not work - no exceptions, I just get a message: "Can't send mail."

I suggest you go ahead, apply the patch, and then test that it works, as you are more familiar with configuring it to work.
