Ah, found it -- weird this ever worked.
It was actually a bug in our pom.

classloading-vfs had this

  <parent>
    <groupId>org.jboss.cl</groupId>
    <artifactId>jboss-cl</artifactId>
    <version>2.0.9-SNAPSHOT</version>
    <relativePath>../build</relativePath> <----- UPS!!
  </parent>
