I was able to resolve this issue in the JBoss QA lab by adding a "JCONNECT_VERSION=6" to the connection string, like this:

jdbc:sybase:Tds:ASEHOST:5000/tempdb?JCONNECT_VERSION=6

This is from case# 11072070 in the Sybase case database.
