I made a similar proposal as part of the ESB project, we should adopt the same structure.

tags/XXX
    Read only copies of each release, never updated
branches/XXX
    Modifications (patches) to previous releases as a 'work in progress'.
trunk
    Current onward development of the codebase
workspace/XXX
    Playground for developers to try ideas not directly associated with any release/onward development.

We should put this structure up on the wiki and then this can be closed.
