I have seen this problem also with my own CMSPortlet. 
It is modified from the CMSPortlet, but keeps the main way of doing.

When I maximize it, it looses the render parameter of the file path to show. The render phase should keep all the params.

Then, the portlet shows the indexPage that is configured in the initParam of the portlet.

I have not investigated it deep.
only in the live JBoss demo of the portal, the CMSPortlet keep the content when it is maximized (and minimized).

may be the live demo uses portal 2.4 SP1... with something corrected about this.
