I've found that the problems described above appear when using JDK 1.4.2 and 1.5.0,but do not appear when using JDK 6. 
Investgiating to see if I can find a bug report relating to this.

Problem is that the baseline version for JGroups 2.4.5 is JDK 1.4.2.

Will confirm that all problems do disappear with JDK 6.
