The problem is solved, thanks to David Lloyd:  Remoting includes an old version of jboss-serialization.jar.  With the newest jar, the problem goes away.

However, just to be safe, the following unit tests 

   org.jboss.test.remoting.marshall.compress.BisocketCompressionStressTestCase
   org.jboss.test.remoting.marshall.compress.HttpCompressionStressTestCase
   org.jboss.test.remoting.marshall.compress.RMICompressionStressTestCase
   org.jboss.test.remoting.marshall.compress.SocketCompressionStressTestCase

Waiting for results in hudson.
