Currently, creating a connection to a peer requires authenticating the user through an available SASL mechanism.  The SASL provider from Sun supports, for example, CRAM-MD5 and DIGEST-MD5, which require the use of user names and passwords.  The ANONYMOUS mechanism would allow the creation of connections without authentication.
