Your best bet for Linux installation is to download and unpack the .zip binary from the downloads page (http://labs.jboss.com/portal/jbossas/download).  The only prerequisite is that you need a JDK, either 1.4.2 or 5.0.  Do not use the JDK that comes with your Linux distro.  By the way, unpacking the zip file is the only step required to install JBoss AS.
