It is working for me now.  I  removed the following from the render-obejct.xml

 
  | <deployment>
  |     <parent-ref>default</parent-ref>
  |     <if-exists>overwrite</if-exists>
  |     <instance>
  |       <instance-name>cmsrenderInstance</instance-name>
  |       <component-ref>render.CMSRender</component-ref>
  |     </instance>
  |   </deployment>
