you may have find your answer by now.

may be you can also look at the CMSObjectCommandFactory and the CMSObjectURLFactory.
this may be a way to do what you need.
(as for the gif, jpg, etc... sub content of a html page).

see also how it uses the StreamContentCommand.
and how it is used in the CMSPortlet.
