multiple windows works perfectly here in FF. If you only see the correct behaviour in IE and you open windows not via ctrl-n but e.g .via the start menu, then you get a completely new  session. That way it has always worked in IE to have multiple session. So my conclusion is that there is something wrong with the way you start new conversations
