Put FredF wants shared dashboards (with lage layout). So the state cannot be stored on the client.

It is a very specific usecase. You could always create a URL mapper that maps:
/portal/doshbard/username to a user's dashboard. Then you may want to restrict the ability to customize only your dashboard.
