Or there is a scheduled task that periodically runs and checks on the system status and when the jboss service is stopped, that task shuts down the system.

No, system logs don't show anything weird, and I observed this behavior on two machines, one with Windows XP and the other is Windows 2003 server (production environment).

For the time being, I'm going to let this go. I found a workaround that works well, though it would really have been nice if I could stop the service from the service console.
