That's the problem. You downloaded the JDK6 version of JBoss-4.2.3 GA and are using it with JDK5. You have two options:

1) Set JAVA_HOME to point to JDK6 and start JBoss.
2) Or Download the JDK5 version of the server from here http://downloads.sourceforge.net/jboss/jboss-4.2.3.GA.zip?modtime=1216412104&big_mirror=1 and use it with JDK5.
