Detail info:
I am using JBoss Messaging 1.4.2.GA-SP1
I would move to 1.4.4 but it (1.4.4 requires jboss-remoting 2.2.3) conflicts with a different issue I resolved with a newer version of jboss-remoting (2.4.0).
Sees like jbr 2.4.0 is not backwards compatible.
