This issue looks similar to
https://jira.jboss.org/jira/browse/EJBTHREE-1442
fixed in JBoss5.

The fix date is Sept/08 while 4.2.3 was released in July/08,
so it won't contain that fix (assuming the bug was present in 4.2.x?).
