Did you check the permissions on /etc/hosts? http://www.jboss.org/index.html?module=bb&op=viewtopic&p=4121889#4121469

For your telnet output, you did not post the last line which looks something like this:

UnicastRefHostName♦J«&ÃÂÂ
εz0r∞å╖XM☺"jç⌐IÇ☺x

Note that the host name ("HostName" in this example) appears right after UnicastRef, and that name must be accessible from the client.
