Found the solution to this problem, although its a temporary fix :

It was something to do with the database permissions added the
permission :

 grant DBA to jbossportal;

And everything seems to work fine.

The permissions for the portal DB credentials is not documented anywhere.

Don't know why Jboss always makes great products with pathetic 
documentation.
