Here is an example that follows in steps sugested in  http://community.jboss.org/thread/159483?tstart=60 http://community.jboss.org/thread/159483?tstart=60.
The map variables are still NOT accessible from a ftl page. Attached please find the example. 
Any suggestions are appreciated.

It uses a script node to define the map and passes to Content variable to the human task.

But it still throws the following error while resolving the map variable in the ftl page:

freemarker.core.InvalidReferenceException: Expression id is undefined on line 6, column 7 in ProcessOrder.
 freemarker.core.TemplateObject.assertNonNull(TemplateObject.java:124)
