I'm not sure whether it will be possible to run the servlet standalone as you need a container to provide the environment.
You might use frameworks like arquillian for that but I'm not sure how much work it will be.

I use often a running jboss and attach the debugger or you might use the the  http://www.jboss.org/tools JBoss tools Eclipse plugins.
