This is an interface that clients (such as JPA and IJ) implement and register with us (via javax.transaction.transaction#registerSynchronization(Synchronization sync). We call them back when the  thread-to-transaction association changes. So it is different. I have updated the forum thread so that we can track the API discussion.

Perhaps I should have not have raised a separate JIRA for it (and subsumed it into JBTM-2342). The reason I chose a separate JIRA is because I though the interface belongs to the SPI (https://github.com/jbosstm/jboss-transaction-spi) whereas JBTM-2342 is for the implementation of the feature.
