ideas to investigate this:

* increase nbrOfTestMessages, will increace the chance of getting the problem
* disabling the logs might also have an effect.  if that is the case, this might be a good occasion to configure the http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/util/logging/MemoryHandler.html
