Yes, a custom work item is just java code, it can do anything you do in java.

You can write your own custom work item handler which can handle performing all the necessary glue however you want that part of the system to work.
The drools workflow docs provide details on how to go about doing this - plus I think you may be able to find some further tutorials and blog posts via google.
