I had the same behaviour when trying to send mails asynchronously (Seam 2.1.1.GA, JBoss 4.2.2.GA, Unix enviromnent, on Windows it worked fine), but was able to fix it:
Like posted above, the error only occured when using quartz. It worked fine with ejb3timer.
I could get it working with quartz as described in the seam reference: add quartz-lib to your ear and add it as java-module in application.xml.
