Hi,
I don't have any problem with updating Aether and Maven versions - I created an issue for that: SHRINKRES-244 , but I'm afraid that it won't have any impact on this issue. 
For searching in repositories is responsible Aether, but according to my brief investigation there is no change in this behaviour between the Aether versions. If you observe different behaviour, let me know...
However, there is a possible solution: https://github.com/MatousJobanek/resolver/commit/a5af73dd802a627bcbe410549ec7f303159d812d
but I need do more testing on that...
