I tried several Python client libraries -- some ODBC, some pure Python, some wrappers for the C library -- and could not get any of them to work.  These included bpgsql, ocpgdb, pg8000 and pyodbc.  In the case of pyodbc, using the postgres ODBC client library (ANSI version!), the client seemed to give up after receiving some server capability messages.
