Another more pervasive approach to consider would be stream sampling based upon query results.  See also http://wiki.postgresql.org/wiki/Estimating_Distinct for a good overview.  However with metadata updates being non-persistent by default and possible performance issues with initial queries that would be a lower priority solution than simply being able to import source system statistics.
