For whatever it's worth. I was able to use the Impala driver with the Hive Translator. I have not tested extensively but simple queries seems to be working and a whole lot faster. I did noticed the Impala driver class is the exact same as the Hive driver class (org.apache.hive.jdbc.HiveDriver). I don't know if this will be an issue in the future if one chooses to load both driver.
