So with the f2f as a buffer in the middle of doing this ticket and after some further discussion with Wojciech Trocki around it, I am not sure of the value provided in putting any further work into this.

Reading back over my comment above the value provided (especially in a production environment) is almost zero, as any need for a retry of failed mutations is more than likely the result of some server-side resolver logic error. To build this (and include persistence) would introduce a wealth of corner cases for things to go wrong.
