1. Steven has been able to demonstrate that the sidecar approach is working, but it means building and maintaining an additional component.

2. The Grafana file scanning approach (I have no idea what to name it) is very simple and it's 90% usable today. The problem is that some small upstream contributions are needed and we also don't know for sure when this version of Grafana becomes GA.

In my humble opinion (and I may be wrong), I would still choose the second approach. I think it will pay off in the long run. This feature in Grafana will become GA with or without our help, and that that point the sidecar might become redundant. Between myself, Wojciech and Steven, we definitely have the skills and understanding of the problem to get it solved upstream.
