This functionality is going to be disabled by default and can be enabled in gatein.ear/02portal.war/WEB-INF/admin/admin-configuration.xml where is configuration of PostRegistrationService, where can be also configured other things (Mail format etc.) Other needed thing is SMTP configuration in server/default/conf/gatein/configuration.properties which needs to be correctly configured for sending mails from portal.
