the behavior seems to be random though
the node created in this case showed up after I clicked on "Home". I then
created another node with a page which showed up right aways, disappeared once then came
back again. Since then the two nodes are displayed properly....

Oops, fixed this without realising it had been unassigned from me.
A patch has been committed into svn (revision 2028) which fixed this problem. The
navigation filter was not returning a node if it was empty, updated the code to only do
this check if we want to filter out non-displayed displayed nodes.

ignore my last comment, it does not apply as the button "Add node" always adds a
root node. A sub-node is added via a right-click then "Add new node"
I'll log another issue to look into some ideas to make this stuff more obvious to use
