Subversion checkout fails on WIndows due to extremely long paths
----------------------------------------------------------------
Key: GTNPORTAL-2314
URL:
https://issues.jboss.org/browse/GTNPORTAL-2314
Project: GateIn Portal
Issue Type: Bug
Security Level: Public (Everyone can see)
Environment: Windows 7
Reporter: Marko Strukelj
Doing a svn checkout fails with:
svn: Can't open file
'C:\devel\gatein-portal\testsuite\selenium-snifftests\src\suite\org\exoplatform\portal\selenium\candidate\.svn\tmp\text-base\Test_POR_19_074_CheckDisplayingOfPageWhenUserHasRightAccessOnPageAndPorletButHasNoRightAccessOnContainerWhichContainsPortlet.html.svn-base':
The system cannot find the path specified.
The problem is that there are many many developers out there doing java development on
Windows exclusively. This issue requires hacking around - doing a partial checkout,
problems with updates and commits from project root directory, creating an overall
unpleasant experience. As a first attempt to fix it we should start by dramatically
shortening testsuite filenames - i.e. Test_POR_19_074_CheckDisplay.html instead somewhat
surreal unreadable current snake of a name.
The problem is that not even documenting a workaround in README.txt will help much - as
it's the second step users do - after a successful checkout. So the feeling for
Windows based developers meeting GateIn for the first time must be really bad: fails on
checkout.
