I appreciate the fast response, but not the lack of assistance. It seems that there is a thin line of what characters are valid in a alias and what aren't. That same code was updated to allow for non English characters through, so I fail to see how this is different. My real use case is the dot operator, but that doesn't seem to be valid either.
