This issue is really out of date. The plan as of 5 is to move away from hbm.xml as a proprietary XML mapping format. Instead we are building an extended JPA orm.xml mapping format that will incorporate Hibernate's non-JPA features. For the short-term there will be a transformation from hbm.xml to this unified orm.xml format.
