I had in my mind the same mental model that Sanne describes in the last two spec quotations. If the provider is not the explicit one nor do a grab for the default one, then it should silently return null.
If it tries to boot and fails mid way, then it's a bootstrap error that should be exposed (as exception I anticipate).
