Yes, a separate method may be even better. Maybe also on a dedicated interface SessionFactoryServiceContributingIntegrator to be optionally implemented by an integrator (was this what you originally suggested as alternative?). Either way I think it'd be nice if this could be configured within the integrator instead of implementing another factory/registry class.
