Something in me makes me avoid using the SessionFactoryObserver as I see it as a hack but I have no ground.

The way I see it, it is a valid integration point. I guess we can ask Steve Ebersole to whether he sees a problem using a SessionFactoryObserver. Steve Ebersole!?
