Thanks for the quick response. I'll use the workaround.
I did see a note somewhere on Hibernate and @DiscriminnatorColumn. I thought it said that it used to be ignored but was now used and that the property you are referring to was to revert to the previous behaviour. Using a @DiscriminnatorColumn of type String is an old habit for me to help check database data. The spec is a bit fuzzy for JOINED strategy.
"11.1.12 DiscriminatorColumn Annotation For the SINGLE_TABLE mapping strategy, and typically also for the JOINED strategy, the persistence provider will use a type discriminator column."
