This bug seems to be still open in 4.1.1.Final.
I just run into the same problem when running my test-cases.
For my test-cases, I configured the BasicDataSource from apache.
Everything freezes, when I run MassIndexer.startAndWait().
The problem vanishes, when I set BasicDataSource.maxActive to a bigger value.
