I thought I didn't care about this since the compiler caught the API mismatch for me but the worst has been the subtle behaviour changes that crept out now that blah = null is getting translated to blah is null behind the scenes. Our tests have caught about a dozen cases but I'm very skittish on what else might be lurking. FWIW, I'm in favor of reverting the original change and providing an alternate API for those that want to automagically handle the case.
