Steve fixed it for invalidate at commit, unfortunately I don't remember the exact version it was.
On flush indeed I believe that the preinvalidate calls are still not optimized yet.
On the other hand I remember that the performance problem dissappered almost completely when I switched from JBossCache to Infinispan. It seemed that Infinispan is able to do the puts a lot faster than JBossCache does.
