Ok, so I'd be inclined to create a contract to be optionally implemented by FieldBridge impls which would return the names of sortable fields created by that bridge; I would mark that contract as experimental for the time being, down the road it could be amended to return the full set of meta-data for the fields created by a custom bridge.
