This seems to be a catch all for numerous problems that exhibit the same symptom. So far I have been able to reproduce this in terms of HQL translation as discussed by Grzegorz. I have not been able to produce this using Hibernate's Criteria API as first reported here. Unless the problem with the Criteria API is based on the 3rd reported problem here related to case sensitive column naming. I have not yet looked into the case-sensitivity issue.
Are y'all still seeing this problem with Criteria and/or column-name case-sentivity in the latest releases?
